HOW TO WORK WITH CLIENTS WITH SENSITIVE EYES
All Lash Artists have worked at one time or another on sensitive clients and/or clients who have developed an allergy to the adhesive.
Whether the client is allergic or sensitive (reactive to the adhesive), they will be more symptomatic when the adhesive is in a liquid state.
As we know, adhesive cures from the outside in and may take 24-48 hours to fully cure/dry.
Sensitive or allergic customers should avoid drinking wine/champagne for the first 24 hours as it may increase sensitivities and cause an allergy
ALLERGY
Although the client may be allergic to Black Carbon (rather rare), he is most often allergic to certain Industrial and commercial grade cyanoacrylates. Cyanoacrylate is the main ingredient in virtually all eyelash extension adhesives. However, you should know that all adhesives are different, there are different molecules of Cyanoacrylates and different grades of Cyanoacrylates (Industrial, Commercial, Medical).
Remember, you are working on the eyes, so using a high quality adhesive is essential.
A skin test using clear tape on one eye and black tape on the other eye will help determine if the client is allergic to carbon black or cyanoacrylate.
Unfortunately, a client can develop an allergy at any time in their life and without warning. This is not what you have done as a Lash Artist, but it is a reflection of how the client's immune system evolves and reacts to the adhesive. The client's symptoms will typically worsen with each application. Once the client's reaction/swelling/irritation has subsided, it is recommended that the lash extensions be removed. NEVER apply adhesive remover to an irritated or swollen eyelid.
SENSITIVITY
Sensitivities can range from mild to severe depending on the client. A sensitive client will only experience symptoms when the adhesive is in a liquid state (24-48 hours) and once healed, symptoms should disappear.
TOP TIPS TO REDUCE REACTIONS/SENSITIVITIES:
"LESS IS MORE"
Use minimal adhesive when applying eyelash extensions. You should NEVER see any glue drops on an eyelash extension during application. The more adhesive on the eyelash extension, the more likely your clients will react.
»BACK IT UP»
Place the eyelash extensions a little bit back from the lash line, at least 1mm. The closer we are to the skin/eyelid, the more reactive our client might be. We NEVER want to touch the skin with glue!
NEBULIZER FAN FAN
By adding moisture with a mister, we harden the outer layer of adhesive and reduce our clients exposure to the liquid adhesive. It is recommended to repeat this process several times throughout the appointment to “cure as you go.” A suggestion would be that with each new drop of adhesive we dispense, we fan, mist, fan. *Remember to air and dry lashes before misting to avoid chock cure.
KEEP YOUR EYES CLOSED
Make sure the eyes are completely closed during the eyelash extension application. Any slight openings can allow adhesive vapors to enter the eyes, increasing the risk of reactions. Apply tape or a patch to the eyelid to add weight and keep the eyelid tightly closed. You should also make sure the pads/patches do not rub in your clients' eyes or hold their eyes open.
SHAMPOO AFTER APPLICATION
By adding one simple step at the end of your service, you may be able to stop sensitivities before they become a problem. That step: Cleanse lashes after application with Star Lashes World Eyelash Shampoo and rinse with sterile water.
ANTIHISTAMINE
If your client is reactive, you may want to suggest that they get their doctor's approval to take an antihistamine to help relieve symptoms.
Always remember that you are the professional! Do not perform a service if you ever feel uncomfortable or unsure. Always ask clients to sign consent/waiver forms before performing a treatment and always perform a patch test on new clients if in doubt.
